On 14 January 2023, Charlotte artist Kevin Harris will open a retrospective entitled I AM at the NINE EIGHTEEN NINE STUDIO GALLERY. The exhibition consists of work from a career that spans over twenty years, from 2000 to the present. His desire to produce art that reflects his view of the Black Experience in America is the beating heart of the exhibition. He chose the title I AM because the combined works define his present state in his evolution as a man. His beliefs on; love and relationships, beauty, music, dance, justice, family and community are boldly declared in his work.
Harris is a multi-media artist specializing in the creation of art that inspires deeper inspection. His ability to accurately convey emotion through the subject’s expression in his portraiture is what draws people in. The texture and depth of his work is what holds them. Mr. Harris’ art seamlessly moves from portraiture to abstract and other subject matter using varying styles that create the illusion of fullness. His curiosity, stoked by a search for excellence, has anchored him in a perpetual state of learning and an openness to the creative process. His work was juried into the ArtPop Street Gallery Charlotte’s class of 2022, and he currently serves on the board of directors that organization.
Kevin has displayed his work in numerous local events including response paintings for the following shows at The Mint Museum:
Under Construction: Collage Artists Response
Decoding: Symbols, Icons, Mysteries & Mischief in the Art of John Biggers
His work can also be found in the permanent collection of the Cabarrus County Courthouse, and he has participated in numerous group shows in the Carolinas, Atlanta and Baltimore. Kevin has professional and consignment relationships with Fosters Frame and Art Gallery in Huntersville, NC; Coffey and Thompson Gallery in Charlotte, NC and Nine Eighteen Nine Studio Gallery, also in Charlotte. His artist collective memberships include the Palette Table, and The Guild of Charlotte Artists. Mr. Harris currently resides in Charlotte, NC and has studio space in the Visual and Performing Arts Center (VAPA).
